Spirit of volunteerism reached new levels during the recent Chennai floods

Many years ago when we relocated to UK for a brief stint, I started my professional work in Oxford as a volunteer at Oxfam’s headquarters. As a young social worker who was a big fan of Oxfam, this opportunity was extremely precious for me. To work as a volunteer in oxfam, one would still need to go through an interview process and get selected. I was mighty thrilled, therefore, when I got in. It also gave me an opportunity to understand the difference between volunteering in India and outside.

A lot has changed in the last few years in India. We have a growing number of youngsters who are choosing to do their gap year with NGOs, signing up for fellowships and even considering full time opportunities in the social space. Rang De chapters have been a great example of how people from all walks of life have come together to volunteer for a cause. Chapter members have been able to contribute effectively and take back a lot too! Volunteering stints with Rang De chapters has also helped many people in pursuing international MBAs in institutes of repute. That apart, volunteering is an experience that one would cherish forever. It is an experience that will enrich not just the organization or cause that one is associated with, but also adds immense value to the individual’s growth.

At Rang De, volunteering opportunities vary from short term projects to more long term ones. If one is considering a career in the social space but there is some degree of anxiety, volunteering is a great way to get started and get comfortable with the space. A couple of our chapter members have gone on to become full time team members of Rang De. Their volunteering experience provided them with an opportunity to experience Rang De first hand.

We currently have volunteering opportunities at Bangalore as well as an opportunity to join the chapter across different cities. You could write, explore your skills with photography,go on field trips, represent us at an event and the list is endless. Do write to us on sowmya@rangde.org to know everything you wanted to know about volunteering at Rang De.
